Bio
Dr. Morgan Byrd serves as the head coach of the Wilberforce University gymnastics team, bringing a wealth of experience, passion, and dedication to the program. A trailblazer in collegiate athletics and an accomplished healthcare professional, she seamlessly combines her expertise as a former Division I gymnast and Doctor of Physical Therapy to nurture the next generation of student-athletes.
Dr. Byrd’s gymnastics journey began as a standout competitor at Central Michigan University, where she competed at the Division I level from 2010-2011. Eager to explore new challenges, she transferred to James Madison University, where she became a pivotal member of the gymnastics team. During her tenure at JMU, she led her squad to back-to-back National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs (NAIGC) team championships, showcasing her leadership, determination, and competitive spirit.
After graduating from James Madison University with a B.S. in Kinesiology, Dr. Byrd furthered her passion for helping others by earning her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from West Coast University in 2018. Her clinical expertise in sports rehabilitation, injury prevention, and performance optimization has made her an invaluable resource for her athletes, ensuring they excel both on and off the mat.
At Wilberforce University, Dr. Byrd is committed to fostering a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and resilience. She emphasizes holistic athlete development, blending advanced training techniques with a strong focus on mental health and academic achievement. Under her leadership, the program has grown into a competitive force, inspiring pride within the university and the broader gymnastics community.
Beyond the gym, Dr. Byrd is a sought-after speaker and mentor, championing diversity in gymnastics and advocating for the advancement of HBCU athletics. She is driven by the belief that every athlete deserves access to elite coaching and opportunities to shine on the national stage.
When she’s not coaching, Dr. Byrd enjoys staying active, mentoring aspiring gymnasts, and spending time with her family. Her ultimate goal is to continue building a legacy of excellence at Wilberforce University, paving the way for future generations of gymnasts to reach new heights.
